Operatives of the Homicide section,Enugu Police Command have arraigned Afam Nweke and Victor Agyula, an alleged native doctor, from Alaede, in Benue State over their complicity in the murder of Sunday Onwe, from Amuri in Nkanu-West Local Government Area of Enugu State, who sought ritual remedy to revitalize the ebbing fortunes of his business in Aba, Abia State.
It was gathered that the deceased left Aba for Enugu on June 22, to meet with Afam Nweke, who was already waiting with the native doctor to perform the necessary rituals as they agreed to re-enact his business in Aba.
Further investigation revealed that the deceased booked a hotel for Afam and the native doctor at the Gariki, Awkunanaw axis of Enugu metropolis where they met before taking off to a bush in Ozalla, on Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway, at about 4:15a.m. on June 23, where the ritual took place.
According to Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, DSP, who confirmed the incident in a release, the deceased was made to drink a liquid concotion suspected to have been prepared with acid.
“The deceased after drinking the concontion, was stripped naked while the remaining liquid was also poured on him. He later became unconscious and fell down.
“The native doctor and Afam Ejima and other cohorts, believing that the deceased was dead, made away with his Toyota Avalon car, his hand-sets and the sum of N430,000, which he had brought down from Aba out of the sales he had made the previous day before setting out for the rituals.
“He was, however, rescued by a good Nigerian, who ran into him while in a helpless state and was rushed to University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital,UNTH, Ituku Ozalla, with the burns the acid had inflicted on him internally and externally. It was at the hospital that the deceased managed to narrate his ordeal. His injuries was severe, prompting a referral to National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, from where he gave up the ghost.
“The state criminal intelligence and investigations department swung into action where they trailed and tracked down Afam Nweke on September 13.
He was investigated and later arraigned before a law court for conspiracy and murder, and currently on remand while the native doctor, who was also at large after the incident, was arrested at Markurdi, Benue State, on September 24”, Police spokesman revealed.
