Femi Gbajabiamila Emerges APC Candidate For Reps Speakership

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) Chief John Oyegun has declared Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila as the candidate to represent the party in the election for the seat of Speaker of Nigeria's House of Representatives.

Mr. Gbajabiamila emerged winner with 154 votes against his opponent, Mr. Yakubu Dogara who scored 3 votes. The election which was held at the International Conference Centre in Abuja was organised by the National Working Committee of APC and had 183 APC House of Representatives Members elect present out of the 209 members, with 161 votes cast. While Mr. Gbajabiamila won the ticket, Mr. Dogara and some of his supporters boycott the election.

A member of the House, Mr. Jibrin AbdulMumin who is also a supporter of Mr. Dogara said he would not participate in the election because it was impromptu therefore there was no time to prepare.

Also, Mr. Muhammed Mungonu emerged as the sole candidate to represent APC for the position of Deputy Speaker of the House. National Leaders of the party have been engaged in politicking and discussions in the past weeks to arrive at a consensus candidate to run for Speaker of the House but could not arrive at an agreement hence the election.

Nigeria's National Assembly is to resume plenary on Tuesday, June 9 and would elect leaders that would lead the Senate and House of Representatives for the next 4 years.
