Police uncover stolen car refurbishing centre in Delta

Three members of a car snatching gang have ran out of luck in Delta State on Thursday as they were arrested by police detectives in Asaba, the state capital.

It was learnt that the suspects had taken some stolen cars to a refurbishing centre located in the Direct Labour Agency area of Asaba. But information about their activities leaked to the police.

Detectives stormed the workshop close to a popular petrol servicing station in DLA and arrested two painters working on thesuspected stolen cars.

When they were asked about the owners of the cars, they told police that the people who brought the cars to them to paint would soon come to claim them.

At that point, it was learnt that the police detectives connived with the painters in order to lure the suspects.

Immediately they came in to take the vehicles, the detectives, who had been positioned around the workshop, rounded them up.

Speaking on the arrest of the suspects, a senior police officer, who was part of the operation, said the suspects had been on the ‘police wanted list’ for a while as a result of car snatching.

He alleged that the gang was an inter-state criminal gang that specialised in snatching flashy cars.

The officer said, “One of the suspects has just opened up, confessed and led the police to Onitsha where they parked a stolen car they wanted to sell before the arrest. As I am talking to you, the police have recovered the car and currently investigating the activities of the gang.

“We also recovered two others cars from the workshop, which were suspected to have been stolen. The painters could not give satisfactory account of how they came about the cars. We have commenced interrogation of the suspects.”

Meanwhile, three suspected armed robbers were killed in a gun duel with the police in Enerhen area of Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

Before the gun duel, it was learned that the criminals had been robbing from place to place and had also robbed a lady of N100,000 cash, a cheque of N1m, mobile phones and other valuables.

A senior police officer (names withheld) attached to the Ugborikoko Division was among those robbed in the process, while on this way to work.

Confirming the death of the suspects, the Delta State Police Commissioner, Mr. Alkali Usman, said a surveillance patrol team from Enerhen Division ran into the armed robbers operating on Warri/Sapele Road while on routine patrol.

He said the robbers were trying to escape after their operation when the police arrived at the scene.
